Paul’s appeal. That comes in the dependent clauses that follow, which call for the unity and harmony of the church. Nevertheless, Paul’s personal appeal for the Philippians to complete (plērōsate) his joy is entirely appropriate in this conversation between close friends. Furthermore, it is in keeping with the whole tone of the letter (Fee 1995, 183). Fee is quite right that this “speaks volumes about Paul’s pastoral heart” (1995, 183). The Philippians have already been a source of joy for Paul (1:4).
